The fastest way to kill FinOps buy-in from engineering teams is to frame it as a cost-cutting mandate that slows them down. The programs that actually stick frame it the opposite way: unit economics as a design constraint, owned by the teams writing the code, not imposed after the fact by finance.

Rightsizing is the obvious lever and still the highest-leverage one — across a recent hybrid estate engagement, 41% of provisioned compute was running below 20% utilization outside business hours. Automated rightsizing recommendations, applied continuously rather than in a quarterly audit, accounted for roughly half of the total 34% cost reduction on their own.

Commitment planning is where most teams leave money on the table simply from not having the data. Reserved capacity and savings plans only pay off if utilization forecasts are accurate, and most finance teams are modeling off last year's growth curve rather than current workload telemetry. Tying commitment purchases to actual usage trends, reviewed monthly rather than annually, captured another 9 points of savings.

The remaining gains came from architecture-level decisions: moving bursty, stateless workloads to spot capacity with graceful interruption handling, and consolidating storage tiers based on actual access patterns rather than defaulting everything to premium SSD. Neither required a rewrite — both required visibility that most teams didn't have.

The through-line across all of it: FinOps only works when the team making the architectural decision can see the cost consequence in near real time, not in a monthly bill they can't attribute back to a specific service. Cost visibility at the point of decision is worth more than any single optimization technique.
